Fighting for Liberation East and West, Marking the 80th Anniversary of D-Day
D-Day, when thousands of allied troops landed on the shore of Normandy, was one of the most memorable moments in World War II. By April of the following year, those allied troops reached the concentration camps of Germany, and tens of thousands of people were liberated. While the Soviets ultimately freed the death camps of Maidanek and Auschwitz in the east, they were assisted in their battle by the various partisan forces.
Please join us for a special professional development program. Bonnie Gurewitsch, Museum Curator and Archivist emerita, will discuss the experience of American liberators during World War II. The Museum will also present the recorded testimony of Jewish partisan, Lyuba Abramovich. Following Lyuba's testimony, Natalia Aleksiun, professor of history at the University of Florida at Gainesville, will examine Lyuba's testimony and discuss how it illuminates the efforts of Jews in the Holocaust to liberate themselves.

The History of Antisemitism: Henry Ford
Переглядів 47414 днів тому
Antisemitism flourished in early twentieth-century America. The Great Wave of Immigration from 1881 to 1914 brought 2.2 million eastern European Jews to America, fleeing persecution and seeking opportunity. They were often met with suspicion, and even violence. One such person who is emblematic of the antisemitism of this time is Henry Ford, founder of the Ford Motor Company. In 1918, Ford purc...
Solidarity and Persecution: Lesbian Experiences in Nazi Germany
Переглядів 28221 день тому
The fates of lesbian women in Nazi Germany have long been contested. When the Memorial to Homosexuals Persecuted Under Nazism opened in Berlin in 2008 it was an occasion for protest. Lesbian activists were frustrated that the monument focused exclusively on the fates of gay men, insinuating that women had not also faced persecution. This talk by Samuel Clowes Huneke, assistant professor of hist...

In the middle of the twentieth century, good cameras became smaller and lighter, enabling street photographers to roam alleyways, ride elevated trains and subways, and stroll beaches in the summertime to capture daily life with urgency and intimacy. Deborah Dash Moore’s book Walkers in the City showcases the distinct urban vision that working-class Jewish photographers produced with these new c...
“Jewish Life in Medieval Spain” Book Talk
Переглядів 23521 день тому
In Jewish Life in Medieval Spain, Jonathan Ray explores the Jewish experience in medieval Spain from the dawn of Sephardic society in the ninth century to the expulsion of 1492. An important contribution of the book is the integration of the rise and fall of Jewish life in Muslim al-Andalus into the history of the Jews in medieval Christian Spain. It traces the collapse of Jewish life in Muslim...
“Jewish Sunday Schools” Book Talk

The earliest Jewish Sunday schools were female-led, growing from one school in Philadelphia established by Rebecca Gratz in 1838 to an entire system that educated vast numbers of Jewish youth across the country. These schools were modeled on Christian approaches to religious education and aimed to protect Jewish children from Protestant missionaries. But debates soon swirled around the so-calle...
Behind the Great Art and the Great Message Stands Arthur Szyk, the Great Man
Переглядів 141Місяць тому
The first lecture in the series will firmly establish Szyk as one of the most popular Jewish artists of his era. He was decorated by the governments of Poland, France, and the United States with medals for both his art and his building of bridges between peoples and among nations. Newspaper and magazine headlines called him: “The Great Artist Arthur Szyk;” “Arthur Szyk, Champion of his People;”...
The Fabric of America Through the Art of Arthur Szyk

Arthur Szyk loved three countries: Poland, the land of his birth; Israel, the land of his people; and America, the land of his ideals. Upon his immigration to the U.S. in 1940, he announced: “At last, I have found the home I have always searched for. Here I can speak of what my soul feels. There is no other place on earth that gives one the freedom, liberty, and justice that America does.” Desp...
Injustice Illuminated: The Holocaust Art of Arthur Szyk

As early as 1934, Arthur Szyk told the American press: “An artist, and especially a Jewish artist, cannot be neutral in these times… Our life is involved in a terrible tragedy, and I am resolved to serve my people with all my art, with all my talent, with all my knowledge.” Szyk went on to become the most important anti-Nazi artist in America during World War II and the leading artist for the r...
Arthur Szyk and the Art of the Haggadah

Arthur Szyk’s Haggadah was not only the most expensive new book in the world upon publication in 1940, but the Times of London deemed it “worthy of being considered among the most beautiful of books ever produced by the hand of man.” Its editor, Cecil Roth declared “To call Arthur Szyk the greatest illuminator since the 16th century is no flattery. It is the simple truth that manifests itself t...
“Between Two Worlds: Jewish War Brides After the Holocaust” Book Talk

Facing the harrowing task of rebuilding a life in the wake of the Holocaust, many Jewish survivors, community and religious leaders, and Allied soldiers viewed marriage between Jewish women and military personnel as a way to move forward after unspeakable loss. Proponents believed that these unions were more than just a ticket out of war-torn Europe: they would help the Jewish people repopulate...

21:47 "He was both the product and the promise of a system of scientific research that was esteemed and enshrined in Germany". It was "a system" that departed from the values commanded by God, and produced Mengele. The same way the Soviets who departed from God, fell into the abys of Chernobyl. And so on..

While living in the Dominican Republic in Santo Domingo I happen to have met some of the descendants of the people in this video. I was very proud that the Dominican government at that time opened the doors while the rest of the world, including the US looked the other way. Nations needed to step up while these people were being exterminated during the Holocaust, but very few did. The Dominican Republic was one of the few that stepped up.

This was a powerful story. The women who spoke can really articulate in the perfect way....I am not gay but I am Jewish and have not had much contact with other Jewish people because I I did not get along with my adopted mother and became a ward of the state at 15 (I am 54 now) So my life experiences and relationships have been without Jewish people.Despite this I am very moved

Poor little boy. How could they ever have done this???? It's NOT a "wonderful world" Louis Armstrong. So sad....doesn't matter how many years this happened. For me time stops when seeing this. Locked in place and it makes me very angry because you bear witness yet you can't reach back in time to rescue him nor can you wring the neck of the bastards killers. Frustrating!

Great discussion - so informative! Indeed, it is very puzzling why this young man's name and deeds have been so long ignored. so much has disappeared from that era, of course - due to the overwhelming horror and magnitude of the crimes - the shock of it all...

I have just received the most brilliant, thorough and unforgettable lesson not only on Auschwitz, as experienced through the eyes of the victims and the nazis, but also on how to read a photograph. I will forever never be able to walk past a photo exhibition, nor any other photo presented to me again. I have watched this video twice already to make sure I understand the message, both of the ability to read a photo and the experience felt by the victims told through the photo of the subjects themselves. I have also started to apply this new skill by already watching other holocaust videos, pausing the video when a picture comes into frame, and spending at least 10 minutes trying to "hear" what the victim is telling me through their presence. Thank you for giving me this wonderful new gift to deepen my understanding of this dark event in the history of the Jewish people. It is a much treasured gift to me, one that I will forever use and never forget how I received. Shalom.

Something about the middle aged, crying woman with the bloodied nose in her undergarments running in terror from pro-Nazi children reduces me to tears even now as an American non Jewish man living in the Midwest. I am broken psychologically by demonic children terrorizing, degrading, beating, torturing, chasing and ultimately murdering an entirely inoffensive, innocent woman, who probably thought they were cute kids before their evil acts against her. Shameful.
